2020 - 2025

Context

Between 2020 and 2025, the TerrAmaz project emerged as a key initiative to address ongoing deforestation and forest degradation across the Amazon region. By bringing together local stakeholders, the project promoted innovative solutions and strengthened coordination at the territorial level.

Through its interventions, TerrAmaz made tangible contributions to the transition toward sustainable production systems, the conservation and restoration of forest ecosystems, and the strengthening of social inclusion for local communities. The project also helped raise the visibility of these initiatives, provided targeted technical assistance, and generated valuable knowledge to inform decision-making and public policy development at the local level.

Funded as part of France’s commitment to protecting tropical forests, TerrAmaz highlights the importance of an integrated territorial approach. By combining territorial planning, technical assistance, and knowledge management, the project supported the development of sustainable pathways that balance economic growth with efforts to combat deforestation.

The project was implemented across five Amazon territories:

  • Guaviare, Colombia
  • Cotriguaçu and Paragominas, Brazil
  • Madre de Dios, Peru
  • Yasuní (FdV), Ecuador

Activities carried out

  • Development of territorial planning tools and methodologies: The project designed tools and methodologies aimed at improving land-use planning and territorial management.
  • Support for the implementation of coordinated actions: TerrAmaz supported the rollout of field-level actions involving agricultural producers, communities, and local institutions across the five pilot territories.
  • Knowledge generation and capitalization: The project produced and systematized scientific and technical knowledge on key topics for transitioning toward deforestation-free sustainable development, particularly in territorial governance, monitoring indicators, and technical and economic benchmarks for sustainable agricultural, livestock, and forestry systems.
The TerrAmaz project aims to support communities in the Amazon region in tackling deforestation and transitioning toward a development model that balances economic growth with environmental protection. In practical terms, the project promotes innovative and more efficient production methods that reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the preservation of regional ecosystems. In the department of Guaviare, project activities focused on supporting livestock producers in order to; Improve dairy production and strengthen value chains through better land-use planning; Enhance production practices and facilitate access to new markets, while protecting natural resources through participation in an environmental certification pilot; Strengthen livestock management practices, increase productivity, and promote more sustainable and environmentally responsible cattle ranching.
