2020 - 2025

Context

Between 2020 and 2025, the TerrAmaz project established itself as a key structuring lever to address the persistent dynamics of deforestation and forest degradation in the Amazon. By mobilizing local stakeholders, it fostered the emergence of innovative solutions and strengthened territorial coordination dynamics.

Through its actions, TerrAmaz made concrete contributions to the transition toward sustainable agricultural systems, the preservation and restoration of forest ecosystems, and the strengthening of social inclusion within communities. The project also helped promote these initiatives, provide strategic technical support, and generate knowledge to inform public policies and territorial development strategies.

Funded as part of France’s commitment to protecting tropical forests, TerrAmaz illustrates the relevance of an integrated territorial approach. By combining territorial engineering, technical support, and knowledge production, the project contributed to structuring sustainable development pathways that reconcile economic growth with the fight against deforestation.

The project operated in five territories across the Amazon:

  • Guaviare, Colombia
  • Cotriguaçu and Paragominas, Brazil
  • Madre de Dios, Peru
  • Yasuní (FdV), Ecuador

Activities implemented

  • Development of territorial engineering tools and methodologies: the project developed tools and methodologies aimed at improving territorial planning and management.
  • Support for the implementation of coordinated actions: the project supported the implementation of actions with farms, communities, and local institutions across the five pilot territories.
  • Knowledge production and capitalization: the project generated and consolidated scientific and technical knowledge on key topics for the transition toward sustainable, deforestation-free development, including territorial governance, monitoring indicators, and technical and economic frameworks for sustainable agricultural, livestock, and forestry systems.
The TerrAmaz project aims to support communities in the Amazon region in combating deforestation and transitioning toward a sustainable development model that reconciles economic growth with environmental protection. In other words, the project seeks to promote new and more efficient production methods that generate fewer carbon emissions and contribute to the preservation of the region’s ecosystems. In the department of Guaviare, the project’s actions focused on supporting livestock farmers in order to: Improve milk production and strengthen value chains through land-use planning Improve production practices and access new markets, while protecting the region’s natural resources, through participation in a pilot environmental certification project Strengthen livestock management techniques, increase productivity, and promote more sustainable and environmentally responsible livestock farming.
