ONF International presents Franco-Mongolian cooperation on wildfire prevention and management at COP17

At COP17 in Ulaanbaatar, ONF International is sharing its expertise alongside Mongolia’s National Forest Agency (NFA) as part of a Fonds d’Équipe France (FEF) funded initiative to strengthen wildfire prevention and management.

Franco-Mongolian cooperation on wildfire management

As wildfires intensify in connection with climate change, ONF International is supporting the NFA in developing integrated decision-support tools to strengthen knowledge, monitoring and management of forest fires in Mongolia.

At the heart of this cooperation is ForLand, a platform designed to centralize, visualize and analyze data on wildfires, areas at risk, alerts and post-fire impacts. Gradually deployed at national and territorial levels, the platform contributes to strengthening monitoring and decision-making capacities for wildfire management.

A first demonstration of ForLand at COP17

During the session “Watching over Mongolia’s forests – a Franco-Mongolian response to wildfires”, held at the National Forest Agency booth, ONF International and the NFA presented the wildfire situation in Mongolia and the cooperation developed through the FEF initiative.

The session also provided an opportunity for a first demonstration of the ForLand platform, as well as for sharing French experience in wildfire prevention and post-fire management.

A cooperation bringing together complementary expertise

The following day, ONF International took part in the FEF Panel, bringing together Mongolian agencies and their French counterparts around three components: weather, forests and water. The panel brought together NAMEM & MFI for the weather component, NFA & ONF International for forests, and Water Agency & BRGM for water.

These two events at COP17 highlighted the complementary expertise mobilized through the Fonds d’Équipe France and the importance of sharing experience to strengthen wildfire prevention, management and post-fire recovery.

This mobilization illustrates the importance of international cooperation to protect forests, natural resources and communities in the face of tomorrow’s climate challenges.
