As part of the Ghabati Hayati programme, ONF International carried out a second mission to Morocco from 19 to 22 September, focused on a study aimed at developing a methodology to assess the success rate of reforestation activities.

This mission provided an opportunity to share the technical expertise of the French National Forest Office (ONF) and ONF International with the National Agency for Water and Forests of Morocco (ANEF), thereby strengthening institutional support for sustainable forest management.

As a reminder, the Ghabati Hayati programme, supported by the French Development Agency (AFD), has the overarching objective of supporting the sustainable management of forests and national parks in Morocco, contributing to a low-carbon, resilient and inclusive transition, as well as to the protection and conservation of the country’s biodiversity.

This mission made it possible to carry out several key activities:

  • The presentation of the results of the analysis and diagnostic phase on reforestation success rates over the past four planting campaigns.
  • The implementation of a field mission alongside forest managers from the ANEF provincial directorates of Taza and Khémisset, across various forest ecosystems in the north-eastern Middle Atlas, the Central Plateau, and the Maâmora cork oak forest.
  • The definition of the programme for the third mission, scheduled for November, which will focus on field data collection, including the testing of the methodology developed by ONF International and validated by ANEF, as well as the collection of the data required to establish a system of reference plots in the country’s main forest ecosystems.

Through these missions, ONF International reaffirms its commitment to strengthening local capacities and developing technical tools in support of sustainable forest management adapted to the challenges of climate change.
