ONFI is a private research bureau (Société par Actions Simplifiée - SAS) created in 1997, stemming from the development of the international activities of the French Forestry Commission (Office National des Forêts - ONF). As such, it receives no subsidies from ONF or the State. Since 2008, ONFI's unique share holder is "ONF-Participation" the internal holding of ONF.
Created in 1966 ONF is a French public establishment with an industrial and commercial character. Its main missions are the management of State forests and the completion of missions of general interest entrusted to it by the State
ONF is one of the world's first forest ecosystem management organisations, and the inheritor of several centuries of experience. With its 10 000 employees, ONF manages 4.5 million hectares of public forest in metropolitan France and almost 8 million hectares of tropical forest in its overseas territories (notably, Guyana, Martinique, Reunion Island and Guadeloupe)
It elaborates, implements and controls 15-20 year management plans and carries out silvicultural operations in those forests belonging to the State and local communities. ONF protects flora and fauna, markets forest products and welcomes the public to those forests it manages. Its experience and ethics are strengthened from day to day.
ONF proposes a wide range of analysis, planning and action tools for the improved management of the forest ecosystem, in addition to all natural environments (wetland zones, dunes and open spaces), valorising them in their ecological and socio-economic dimensions and therefore installing them sustainably in the landscape and in the heart of man.
ONF's environmental policy is an integral part of its management system. Its engagement towards the environment is manifested in its link to ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certification.
All State forests and the majority of communal forests produce PEFC certified wood. Compliance with this certification scheme is in coherence with the objective of sustainable forest management which constitutes the heart of the daily actions of ONF.
